Boys swimming makes history at state

BY MAYA LAWNICKI — The boys swim team took home a second place finish at the state meet in Madison after a productive season. The second place finish at the state meet was their best finish since 1949. “The guys were incredibly committed, extremely dedicated to the task at hand, and really motivated to accomplish their goals by the end of the season,” said Tom Miazga, head coach. Bonni Haber, retired Atwater principal and literature instructor, received a letter from Kate Morton, author of The Distant Hours, on Feburary 14. This was a response to the many letters sent by Haber’s class in 2012, when the eighth graders participated in an outside literary course, Contemporary Classics. “This class was a really nice way to get an exposure to different types of books and share what I learned to people with similar interests,” said Ananya Murali, junior. Watershed fosters a respect for the environment

Several students participated in Watershed Wisdom this summer, exploring the Milwaukee River watershed for 11 days. Watershed Wisdom is a hands-on, environmental education class offered by the high school with the help of SEED funding. Throughout the program, students navigate the Milwaukee River watershed by biking, hiking and canoeing. Students discuss a range of issues through readings and observations, and record their reactions by journaling. Upon finishing the class, students receive one English credit, one health credit and one environmental science credit.
