Program honors veterans

BY ANANYA MURALI– Sunday, May 29 marks Shorewood’s 17th annual Memorial Day program at Atwater Park. The event typically consists of various student performances, from readings to music by students from the district’s band, orchestra and choir programs. Each year there is also a keynote speaker, either a retired military officer or veteran. The 2016 speaker was Saul Newton, who served a tour of duty in Afghanistan and is the founder and executive director of the Wisconsin Veterans Chamber of Commerce. Students shovel snow

BY SABINE PETERKA — This winter, the Senior Resource Center worked to connect the elderly to students or adults to help them shovel their snow. “Every year, older or disabled residents contact the Senior Resource Center because they have trouble removing the snow,” said Elizabeth Price, coordinator and Senior Resource Center director. “We maintain a list of people who are willing to shovel for money, and we keep their address and when somebody calls in, we will give them the name of someone who’s within six blocks of them.” Price said companies that offer shoveling services are often unaffordable or … Continue reading Students shovel snow

Mission trip success

Several students went on a trip to Battlecreek, Michigan from July 26 to August 2, where they helped the community through the volunteer program, Habitat for Humanity. Jake Skinner and Joe Kosidowski, juniors, as well as Helena Rose, Dylan Larson-Harsch and Elizabeth Hayes, seniors, all went on this trip through their church, The First Unitarian Church of Milwaukee. “Our church has been going on this trip for ten, eleven, twelve years, and at this point, I think it’s kind of a tradition,” Rose said.
